Rigi to Arth-Goldau

06.02.2011 - Flying

Sunny Sunday on the Rigi. Stefan and I take the rack railroad from Arth-Goldau up to the Staffelhöhe. On the way, in the shade, it is still icy and Stefan falls backwards on his paraglider and crushes his hand. But a real Indian knows no pain and if need be you can fly with one hand... We lay out our gliders on the rather flat relay meadow and have to run quite far for the first flight without much wind and thermals. A flight phase with only a few meters over the meadow follows until it finally becomes more sloping at Känzeli. Since it is still a bit early the first flight is only a glide to the landing site Wäggis. The slope landing was quite tight but safe.

On the second flight the thermals were a bit better, so I was able to stay above the Känzeli and flew around the heads of the astonished tourists. The second landing in Wägges was also unspectacular. In contrast to the flight and the view over the Vierwaldstättersee: Wonderful! The lake glistened below us and really dazzled.

Back at the top, by now it is already past 5 p.m., we plan our return flight to Arth-Goldau. Since we have never flown the route from Staffelhöhe to Arth-Goldau, we have to rely on the assessment of a local: "That's enough with the hüttigä glider". As it turned out during the glide along the already shaded mountain flank, the local's statement was wrong, or rather he had certainly included two more thermal tubes. My vario did not make a single peep and I was accordingly without a harness extremely flat to create no unnecessary drag. Below me only forest, highway and lake: hardly any landing possibilities. I always tried to fly to the highest possible point, as close as possible to the relief. I flew over one flank with a distance of two meters to save the detour around this nose. When I looked back, I saw Stefan flying a little lower around the nose. The altitude dropped constantly and after each flank there was another one. Arth-Goldau did not want to show up. Shortly before the ground the valley towards Arth opened up and I still had about 100 meters altitude to aim at a free meadow. When I landed in Ober-Arth, two bus stops away from Arth-Goldau, it was almost too dark to sort out the lines. I then met Stefan on the bus. He also reached Ober-Arth safely. That was a thrill again!
