South Africa - Kiteboarding Lesson No. 1

16.02.2009 - Travel

Finally we start kiting. After breakfast at 'Friday Island' on the beach right next to the sports center, Corinne and I start at 9am. Corinne gets an introduction to surfing from 'Kutte' a retired German who has been teaching for 30 years. They leave with a kayak for the instructor and surfing equipment for Corinne. Meanwhile, a pretty blonde Polish woman named "Dorota" greets me and introduces herself as my kite instructor. Corinne has forbidden me to take photos of her ;-).

The first two hours I get an introduction to kiting on the beautiful, deserted Langebaan beach, but only on land. We don't even take the board with us. The wind has - wehn astonished - somewhat decreased. I master the small practice kite right away: everything analogous to the paraglider so far: left, right, screw, touch-and-go. But the 'real' kite, I learn, has to be inflated. Already after this first sporty exercise I'm out of breath - but as it turned out, one end of the tube to be inflated was still open... I take it the pretty Polish woman times not bad - can happen to anyone, gasp. This is followed by the obligatory 'self-rescue' lesson: What do I do on the open sea when my kite has crashed, can no longer be started and I am already being circled by hungry Heien: Ruel No. 1: DON'T PANIC. I remain confident. In the Saldana Bay the Heie should come exclusively to the mating - whether you are hungry afterwards, however, did not stand in the clever book in our Guesthouse... Unfortunately, the wind continues to decrease and we end the first lesson early and return to the sports store.

Corinne successfully completed her first two lessons and comes back from the sea with a big grin and dry hair - something the teacher has never experienced in his 30 years of teaching. But Corinne is also a very water-shy animal. Best prerequisites therefore to lose in no situation the sail from the hands or hold a foot from the board in the cold water. I am impressed. For me, the first hours of surfing were a wet and salty experience.

We enjoy the afternoon in the shade in our guesthouse and stroll along the beach to Pearly's in the evening. Of course the wind picked up again in the afternoon, but 'my' Pole was already booked elsewhere for a private lesson and I had to enviously watch the other kiteboarders again.
