South Africa - Wine Tasting

04.02.2009 - Travel

Got back to my old rythm: to bed at 11 pm, up at 7 am. Fredi too. Together Käfele. Then I dedicate myself to my photos and this website. Much time until Corinne gets up between 9 and 10 o'clock. The day starts with breakfast on the veranda. The temperature is already pleasant at half past nine. Ham, toast, confi, cheese, what more could you want. We decide to go on a wine tasting tour in the hinterland. Unfortunately Chrigi is not yet fit enough to accompany us.

Our first target is the "Fairview" farm with the striking "Goats Tower". The farm is extremely beautiful and "cute" even for Swiss standards. Beautiful park with colorful flowers and exotic plants. We have a glass of white wine (Vinognier) before noon. We sit comfortably outside under the sunshades. As always, there is a light breeze and we enjoy the morning.

As a second excursion destination, the larger wine farm "Nederbug" is selected. We drive through the once again extremely beautiful and clean "Paarl", which has its name from the nearby black hill, which consists practically only of a single, but huge, round rock. In winter, when it rains, this rock shines like a pearl. The houses are all white or whitewashed in light colors. Looked a hundred years ago probably hardly much andersst as today. Beautiful here!

We arrive at the Nederburg farm. It's much classier here than at Fairview, but just as clean and perfectly dressed up. We allow ourselves a Testing for 15 and 30 Rands (/8 = 2 and 4 euro!). We are served as in the restaurant and the characteristics of the respective wine explained. Corinne and I enjoy six half-full glasses each of the finest white and red wines. Fredi sips along. It regrets us the in each case remaining quarter of the glass to pour out - but otherwise we would lie in the half already under the table. The South Africans (or the other tourists) may well drink more than we do... the respective wine bottle stands invitingly on the table for refilling. We round off the Wine Tasting with a 38% Brandy. Now but a little bit dazed, I decide to buy another bottle of the fine sweet wine from the tasting: Special Late Harvest 2008. Well chilled, an ideal dessert wine.

Late lunch on the return trip on the "Hillcrest". Special lunch: salami and brie cheese with jam in puff pastry. Super!

I have the paraglider with me and decide to hike up to the "Kanonen Hök". The sun is already low, but the wind is blowing quite strong. Fredi and Corinne drive me to half height. Over the fence and always up along the road. The paraglider weighs about 16 kg which I slowly feel. After a quarter of an hour and still a bit out of breath at the top, I can't find a free spot for my paraglider. On the side where the wind is, everything is overgrown with high bushes. But the gust peaks are around 30 km/h anyway. A bit too rough for me. But the soundscape is fantastic. The many wire struts of the radio masts hum loudly in the wind. I have a great panoramic view of Durbanville and across to the sea. Larger fires cloud the view, but the light through the smoke is nice and reddish.

After half an hour I'm back downstairs and Fredi and Corinne pick me up again after their shopping. Merci! A nice evening outing on foot. Maybe tomorrow I will have my first South African flight.
